The Wall Street Journal: U.S. to ease import tariffs on Japanese steel and aluminum in effort to reset trade relations

WASHINGTON—The Biden administration is moving to ease import tariffs on Japanese steel and aluminum, according to people familiar with the situation, in the latest step by the White House to reset trade relations with allies.

The Biden administration is expected to announce later Friday a plan to start negotiations with Tokyo on easing the tariffs, with a goal to set up an arrangement to allow some Japanese metals to enter the U.S. tariff-free, the people said.

The decision follows the administration’s agreement late last month with the European Union to relax tariffs on European steel and aluminum, removing a longstanding irritant between the two sides.

The tariffs were imposed by former President Donald Trump, who said he wanted to protect the domestic steel and aluminum industries from imports.
