Key Words: As Democrats push $3.5 trillion package, Republican lawmaker blasts ‘spending that drives up prices, kills jobs’

Republican lawmakers on Thursday slammed Democrats’ $3.5 trillion spending package as a key House committee considered parts of the huge measure, with one top GOP congressman saying it’s all entirely unnecessary, especially given inflation concerns.

Republican Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas, the ranking member of the House Ways and Means Committee, offered this assessment:

‘The last thing Americans need right now is trillions more in government spending that drives up prices, kills jobs and wastes our hard-earned tax dollars.’

Brady also argued that all that Americans want from Democratic-controlled Washington, D.C., is for politicians to “focus on defeating COVID, rebuild a healthy economy and stop wasting our hard earned tax dollars.” He said the big spending package will “usher in a new era of government dependency with the greatest expansion of the welfare state in our lifetimes.”

Meanwhile, Democrats praised the $3.5 trillion package, which promises spending on “human infrastructure,” climate change and other party priorities.

“We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to make transformative, beneficial change. This is our moment to lay a new foundation of opportunity for the American people — with emphasis on opportunity,” said Democratic Rep. Richard Neal of Massachussets, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee.
