Kelley Blue Book: Subaru is making an EV. When can you get one?

first electric vehicle will be an SUV, the 2023 Solterra. It will go on sale in the middle of 2022 as a 2023 model.

That’s nearly all anyone outside of Subaru knows about the Solterra. The company just released the date, along with some cleverly disguised photos revealing a few parts of the car.

upcoming bZ4x electric SUV, which only tells us a little. Toyota has kept the bZ4x’s specifications under wraps as well. We expect the Solterra to start at around $45,000, but Subaru has given no hint about pricing.

Subaru promises that the Solterra is “the most technologically advanced Subaru ever” and features “legendary Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive and plenty of ground clearance.”

We suspect that the Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive they refer to is not the same system found on gas-powered Subarus. Engineers can easily build an AWD EV by attaching an electric motor to each axle so that all four wheels have power, which seems like a mechanically simpler approach than adapting the existing Symmetrical AWD system to work with an electric motor.

We’ll bring more on the Solterra as soon as Subaru has more to say. Meanwhile, enjoy thinking about the work that went into obscuring the profile for this shot:
