Dear Quentin,
I recently read
this story on a local news channel: “Blindsided: Some nursing homes across the country aggressively pursue friends and relatives for a loved one’s unpaid bill. Federal laws are supposed to shield third parties with no financial ties to residents from nursing home debts.” Evidently, the paperwork had fine print outlining fiscal responsibility. I believe Ohio is one of the states that will pursue adult children for money when their parents are on Medicaid.
I do not expect or need anything from my parents, nor do I want anything. I learned a long time ago that I can only rely on me. I imagine that one day my parents will qualify for Medicaid. One is disabled and on Medicare. Growing up, life was okay. I had a roof over my head and food, but several times I had to help pay the water or electricity bill or buy food. There was food insecurity. Working 30 hours a week took away from my ability to perform to my fullest ability academically.
