In May, someone impersonated a senior White House official in texts and calls to elected officials and business executives. Recipients, including U.S. senators, thought they were hearing from Susie Wiles, the White House chief of staff. 

But it was actually

a fake. To mimic Wiles’ voice, the impersonator used AI-generated deepfake software. This cheap, easily accessible software takes a public voice clip and alters it to fool the target.
