Waymo, the robotaxi startup backed by Alphabet

GOOGL GOOG, will become the first company to offer driverless rides on U.S. highways, expanding its coverage beyond city streets.

Waymo said it will begin offering highway trips across the San Francisco Bay Area, Phoenix and Los Angeles when it will be “meaningfully faster” than alternate routes. To start, freeway driving will only be available for riders who opt in to the service through Waymo’s app.
